Each day there are thousands accidents occuring within the place of work all around the globe. It does not matter what part of the world it is or what company or corporation is involved, its just not tangible to trim down accident figures to zero. However you can significantly impact these figures and make every effort to avoid death in the vast majority of cases. Employers in the UK have a legal responsibility to do everything within resonable practicality to ensure the safety of their workers, visiting customers and even members of the public who may enter their site, this even applies to persons on the premises without permission, thats right! If a burglar injures himself on your premises you can be held accountable. You must take safety measures for all forseeable eventualities.
In order to ensure your workplace is safe, there are a number of obvious places to start, firstly maintaining equipment is a good place to start, make sure guards are used on plant wherever there are exposed and hazardous moving parts, the rule of thumb here is that if you can do the job on a machine with a guard in place then a guard must be in place. Make sure regular checks are carried out on plant and equipment and that any defects are dealt with before the equipment is used. You can not afford to allow staff to use defective equipment where it poses a risk to health. this is true for both legal and ethical reasons.
You also have an obligation to ensure that employees are not exposed to harmful materials of chemicals, and that in the situation where this could be the case that proper training and protective personal equipment is provided. PPE must be provided at the companies expense, although you can charge employees the price difference if they request a different model of equipment for reasons of style, if they need a different model to ensure the equipment functions properly it is again the business that must pay.
Training is a legal responsibility that must not be overlooked, and needs to be provided by a competent person. I would reccommend the use of a certified training person as this shows in a court that you have properly fulfilled your duty, it is no good getting the training done by someone not qualified to train, even though they may be competent, they are not a qualified teacher.
