When the topic of Emotional Intelligence (EI) or Emotional Quotient (EQ) was first introduced, I developed an EI competency model with emotional self-awareness as the support for the model. The model depicted the necessity of building a solid base of emotional self-awareness before progressing to developing the other Emotional Intelligence skills (emotional self-management, emotional self-motivation, empathy and nurturing relationships). Yet, regardless of the critical importance of emotional self-awareness, many of us go through our lives, oblivious and unwittingly accepting the roller coaster of emotions we experience brought on by today’s challenges. Without understanding where we are dispensing our emotional energy, it becomes hard to enhance the other EI competencies.

We’ve all become so used to today’s ever increasing pressures that we barely notice when the heat is turned up. And when we are no longer able to cope with the pace of these escalating challenges, we experience negative emotions, which, in turn increases our stress level. While the damaging effects of stress are well-recognized, it’s surprising that many people don’t recognize they are experiencing negative emotions, which, in turn, elevate their stress.

Beth’s Story:

Because she worked in a technical field, Beth, one of my Emotional Intelligence program participants, couldn’t imagine that EI could have any impact on people’s performance. The concept seemed implausible. In addition to her work’s rational nature, the organizational culture reinforced the concept that emotions played no role in her work. Beth also carried this impression over into her personal life. During our goal-setting session at the start of the program, Beth told me that she was not aware of her emotions and they couldn’t possibly be of any significance to her work. Beth also told me that her colleagues were difficult to work with. Because she was not aware of from her feelings, Beth did not understand the emotional impact she had on co-workers. In addition, Beth’s boss sensed that she was at the bottom of all her problems. He perceived that Beth’s difficulties were a result of her insensitivity to others, lack of emotional self-awareness and distant behavior.

As a result of the training program, Beth began to practice the simple, proven Emotional Intelligence techniques taught to develop her emotional self-awareness. Beth and I met for her initial coaching session. With tears in her eyes, Beth told me that she now understood that she did have feelings and those emotions that were negative were negatively impacting her relationships both at home and at work. Beth recognized that when she distanced herself, her co-workers viewed her as unapproachable. Beth shared her insight with her boss, in confidence. Before this conversation Beth’s boss was not aware that she had no idea about her behavior and its effect on her co-workers. With this new perspective, Beth’s boss was more disposed to supporting and listening to her.

Beth’s experience is not uncommon. Many of us go about our daily lives unaware of our emotions and how our emotional responses might be impacting our relationships. As a culture, we are predisposed to disregarding emotions. Our focus seems to be on getting the work done. We don’t seem to recognize that discounting emotions can be detrimental to effectiveness and productivity.

Without the awareness of the critical importance of emotions, we lack insight into how our negative reactions to events, situations and people are affecting us and those around us. Our negative emotions can initiate upwards of 1400 biochemical events, some of which result in physiological changes such as increased adrenaline, heart rate, blood pressure and cortisol (the stress hormone). These events negatively impact our physical energy, mental clarity and personal effectiveness. Experiencing these negative emotions can cause us to be highly reactive, displaying behaviors such as anger and defensiveness which may cause others to avoid us. And when others are hesitant to approach us, we can loose their valuable help, insights and suggestions.

Where Do You Start?

Start by noticing when you are experiencing negative emotions. List those times and the events both at work and at home when you notice those negative feelings. For example, you may feel anxious before meetings. Or you may feel angry when others don’t fulfill their commitments. Or you may feel frustrated when a deadline is shortened. Identifying and listing these events helps you recognize those things that trigger negative emotions.

Next, develop an emotional vocabulary by naming the emotions the identified triggers evoke. Expand your vocabulary to include positive emotions you experience during fun times. By recognizing and naming your emotions, you will start to become more emotionally self-aware. Over time, notice where you are expending most of your emotional energy. When you find yourself feeling negative emotions, use some simple, emotional management techniques, to transform those emotions into positive, productive energy.

How to improve concentration

Now, does this question pop up every now and then?

Do you always called to school by your child’s teacher about his or her concentration in class?

Well, chances are your child is lacking focus and concentration in them instead of just lazy or playful.
But do you know that and it might come as a surprise to you that 75% of these kids have a golden future, and are in fact great and wonderful people.

It is because these kids brain worked somewhat different and in many circumstances they are just bored with the teaching materials or lessons.

As a matter of fact, most kids will want to get better grades and get in front of their peers. But most of them do not know and where to get started to better improve their concentration.

Some child will be more proactive than others and would try to make notes and study harder in class while others would go for private tuition class after school or over the weekend.

In fact, most children who hardly concentrate in their school work or in class are mainly the victims of distractions.

Distractions can dramatically reduce one concentration. And let’s face it, school schedule is hectic and one has to study at least 3 subjects every day within limited time.

How can a child be effectively focused on a particular subject and more likely that in school there is more distraction you can find as compare to your house.

And to ignore distraction in school is to teach your child to focus. It is through focusing that you can improve concentrations in them and get better grades.
If you find the above method hard for your child to accomplish, you can also try music therapy to improve concentration in your child.

This can be done at home in a controlled environment. What you can do is, just set aside a sound proof study room with correct lighting and plays a soothing soft music in the background for them while they are doing their homework.

This will stimulate their brain and to improve concentration greatly. They will likely to be more focus and absorb more as there is no distraction from external forces.

If your child is willing to learn how to improve concentration, then you may want to enroll them in some education center that is located near or around your house.

Some education centers provide free workshop or seminars for parents to get a feel of how the center works and to interact with the staffs or trainers. This will prove invaluable for your child and you to make an informed decision before enroll.

All of us, no matter who we are, face endless change and adjustment in life. Regardless of whether they are changes created externally, such as those initiated by world events, or those created internally by developmental processes, or other responses required to life events such as the birth of a new baby, beginning a new job, marital discord, divorce, or the death of a family member. Unfortunately, life never remains static and as a result, neither can we.

Noted change management guru, William Bridges, has identified a simple three-step model for understanding and coping with the changes in our lives:

1. Endings

I appreciate Bridges’ model because it is one of the few that I’ve seen that reminds us that all changes – whether the “good” ones or the “bad” ones – start with us losing something. No matter how much we might be excited about the new venture (e.g., going off to college, new job, getting married, relocation), the new thing initially requires that we give something up.

We generally have to release the established, the usual, and the comfortable. This might involve changes to existing relationships, leaving a neighborhood where we’ve lived for most of our lives, releasing our accepted position of “authority” or being the “go-to” person at the office. Maybe we’ll have to let go of a social circle that we’ve had for our entire lives. Pals with whom we attended school. A memory-filled house, with a huge backyard for barbecues, plenty of room for the kids and all their playmates. Possibly it’s something as simple as a quick and easy commute to work.

Regardless of the adjustment in our life, it’s a good bet that the first thing(s) that we’ll notice are the things that we are required say goodbye to.

2. Neutral Zone

The next stage of the process is I think the most difficult one. We’ve released all the accepted, trustworthy, comfortable, accustomed things that we’ve come to rely upon to streamline our routine decision-making processes, a support group we can share our trials and tribulations with, all the reliable “safety nets” we’ve incorporated into our lives: the insurance agent we’ve trusted, our child’s schoolteacher, the community center where we’ve become well established and have strong supportive relationships.

The Neutral Zone is the phase where all the “old stuff” has to be left behind, but the necessary new support infrastructure hasn’t yet been created, or if existing, they are still new and rather delicate.

Life can be noticeably frightening in the Neutral Zone as you live in a state of novelty, ambiguity and uncertainty. But persistence and perseverence are the keys to a victorious journey through the Neutral Zone.

3. Beginnings

Steadily, over time, we establish things for our new life. If we’ve just started college, we’ve attended all our classes, met the profs, met some friends, and perhaps joined a fraternity or sorority. If beginning a new career, we’ve overcome the initial shock of being the rookie, to being a full-fledged team member, and we’ve learned a lot about how to peform the duties expected of us. We’ve met our managers and many of our peers (perhaps we’re no longer the “newest” kid on the block). If launching a new business, we’ve got the basic foundations established. We’ve probably found a new residence, unpacked most (if not all) the boxes. We know where the best food stores, drug stores, department stores, car repair shops, beauty salons, and hospitals are found.

Things are slowing settling into a routine, and life is becoming more normal – and more predictable every day (although it will never become totally static, or static).

We’re changing and growing into our new roles and adjusting to our new location.

This doesn’t happen overnight; it takes time. The worst thing you can do is expect that it will materialize quickly – it won’t. Give yourself, and your family, sufficient time and space, to incorporate the change – and they will!

It has been confirmed that the person who would mainly impact your accomplishment is your own self. Your outlook determines how you would perceive and reply to challenges or problems. So, it is incredibly vital that you maintain a positive approach when dealing with things.

This is a technique to make certain that you rule the reigns over every aspect of your life.

Understand Your Subconscious Mind

Basically, you would recognize if you are a positive thinker by taking note of the words that you make use of when you are asked to express the things that are going on in your life. What would you use to express your profession or your marriage? The language that you utilize will give you an idea about how you tend to think – whether you perceive the glass half full or half empty, in a manner of speaking.

It has been said that the secret to cheerfulness is how you observe things. If you look at the glass as half full, you’d continuously have the gift of hope, confidence and happiness.

This is vastly essential mainly since you’d always be dealing with crisis, challenges and difficulties. By having the capacity to look at things positively, you would be able to concentrate on solutions more readily than on problems. This, in turn, will help you face life’s challenges with more effortlessness. Do not consider life’s difficulties as problems, but rather as mere challenges that you can triumph over and, in the procedure, make sure that you do not lose vision of your goals.

Gain Mind Power By Way of Positive Thoughts

Your odds of achievement are influenced by how you look at things and how you see life. The way you think – positive or negative – is genuinely powerful. Do you know that there’s scientific proof that says negative thinkers are much more likely to get physically ill than positive thinkers? If your point of view is influential enough to make you ill, absolutely it is able enough to color your likelihood of success?

While you think positively in relation to the things in your life, you are empowered to do something. Negativity usually paralyzes your faculties of inspiration and action. When you believe that problems cannot derail you and if you believe that success can be yours, then you will obtain the ability to see your plans through and to accomplish your goals.

You won’t be paralyzed by indecisiveness, fears and hopelessness. Instead, you will be crammed with vitality and you’ll be raring for action.

Your positive viewpoint should also assign you social influence. If you are a person who remains unfazed even in the face of adversities, you’re a person people would aspire to be with and talk to. You’re a person other people are likely to follow.

Do You Have Positive Power?

So, how do you react to life’s adversities? Do you relate to yourself as a positive person or not? How do you reply to things when they are not going well? Do you recognize that it is to be expected that you’d encounter problems along the way or do you allow these problems to get the best of you?

Talk to yourself sometimes. Look at yourself in the mirror and talk yourself into being optimistic. Strive to uplift your own self confidence and fortify your self esteem. Realize how to be constructive and positive when dealing with things. You would sooner or later notice that things seem to work out the way you want them to.

You gain control of your emotions and actions and these actions would lead to positive results.

The questions of life may call to you. That elusive quality where time loses all meaning. The bigger questions of life and the role you want to play in that are great questions! Important questions! The journey itself can be a tremendous reward. The pursuit of worthy goals and self-discovery is not easy. There will be plenty of tough times, inner soul searching, periods of enormous movement and change, periods of stagnation and possibly even despair. Instead we are fearful of change or to focused on the negatives or “what if” scenarios. Everyone will have a unique journey to reach their discovery. The journey will be made intentionally or unintentionally. Don’t get so focused on the goal that you don’t get the full experience of the journey. The journey is so critical.

I noticed the other day that the sports broadcasters were telling viewers about a first round knockout in one of the big UFC fights I remember during my younger years watching boxing on TV. Some of the fights loom big in my memory. Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frasier with Howard Coselle giving color commentary with his very exclusive but fascinating style.

A warrior wants to win by knock-out if he possibly can. When a boxer is introduced at the commencement of the bout, the audience is informed of their boxing record and the number of knockouts they have scored. A fighter wants to be known for the power of his knock out punch. The two down-to-earth things that seem to me to make a good fighter is their capability to land a good blow and their ability to take a blow.

I have to acknowledge that even though I am a reverend and spend a lot of time developing a sermon so that I can post bible sermons on the web, I also like to watch two guys go at in the ring, be it traditional or octagon. I guess I learned to like it growing up.

I remember the first time I dunned a pair of boxing gloves. It was in the 6th grade in the grammar school I attended. It was the sixties and we had a principal who was into boxing. Occasionally, he would take we boys to the P.E. room, pair us up, and bring out two pair of gloves and everyone would enjoy watching us box it out two at a time.

On the first such occasion, though somewhat scared, I thought “Those gloves with their thick stuffing couln’t hurt too much!” About 15 minutes later, when it was my time to take a punch at one of my buddies, I found out that the padding didn’t keep it from hurting a lot. I took a forceful hit to the nose and it HURT LIKE THE DICKENS! It was at that point that I made the decision if I was going to duke it out, I might as well get a little mad, too. So I decided instead of being buddies, I’d punch him in the muzzle. The next couple of moments was a more exciting fight which we both lived through. Afterwards, we resumed our friendly relationship but felt proud we had demonstrated that we were blooming toward manhood with some brawl in our hearts and a big slug it out match to our resumeThink ahead with me six years to my twelfth year. It was then we had a football coach who really liked boxing. So one rainy day, he gathered the team in our auditorium, moved the chairs out of the way, and pulled out two pair of boxing gloves. The coach stipulated that we would all have three two-minute rounds in our boxing bouts. There were some really good ones, too! Again I ended up matched against one of my best buddies.

When the coach blew the whistle to start our match, my buddy who always joked around with me, stopped his teasing and commenced beating the stuffing out of me. It did not seem our football team was impressed that I used my face to impose damage on my pal’s fists. I was really excited when the coach blew the whistle that signaled the end of the first round. I was afraid my friend’s hands were going to be really bruised up! While in the chair thinking about how I did not desire to go back into the ring of death but afraid to face the notion of being a quitter, something happened. One of my otherbuddies came over to me and said this, “He’s left-handed, and he’sslaughtering you with his left handed punch. Watch out for the left hook. That’s all he’s got.” That proved to be golden advice. He was right. Occasionally, we even called my boxing friend, “Lefty.”

The coach blew the whistle to begin round two. Those words, “Watch out for the left hook!”, were still ringing in my ears. Well, maybe my ears were ringing because of the drumming my skull had been taking. Anyway, actually armed with some much needed advic, I walked into the ring watching for the left hook. I did not have to wait long at all. After the first round had been a walk in the park for my adversary, he came out swinging away with that left. He had made the determined decision that he wanted to way lay his good buddy.

The first left hook he threw, I easily raised my right hand and blocked it. I thought, “Wow! This is neat!” In addition, my face really cherished the help because up to this point, it had tried to win the match all by itself. He slung another left, I blocked it. From the crowd I heard my otherfriend shout, “Hit him!” It is hard to explain but somehow when you are fighting for your life, and you don’t know what to do, the evident can sometimes get away from you. You get bewildered. Things you know escape and hide. Your cognitive abilities become reduced to that of an armadillo. Yet an armadillo can roll up into a nicely protected shell and play dead. I was without such a shell. I heard myfriend again, “Hit him!” So since it was a boxing match, that seemed like a sound plan to me.

“Lefty” came at me again. He used his left hook. I blocked it again, and then Ithought of the fact that I had a left hand as well. I don’t know where it had been hiding out until that moment, so I called it into action and swung and let my buddy’s face join the action. After all, it had felt left out to that point in the competition. This seemed to stun my friend. While he was in awe and astonished that I had found a new limb, I followed up with my high-quality hand. I hit him solid with a right. He staggered. Quickly regaining his composure, he came at me with a different look in his eyes. It was not, “Hey, you want to get a good cold coke afterwards!” It was more like, “There is not going to be an afterwards!”

I remembered the words, “Watch out for the left hook!” True to form, he swung his left. I blocked it and pelted him again..and again…and again. This continued for a minute or so. The competition had shifted my way and my face was delighted to share the glory with my fists. Finally, after my buddy’s left hook had been blocked once again, I was able to counterpunch (though I did know that is what it was) and land a reallyforceful strike. It crooked his whole body around. He had been boxing with bare feet. When his body was twisted around so quickly, a half-dollar sized area of skin on the bottom of his left foot which was pressing hard against the tile floor was literally pulled off. Yep, it was an ugly site. The fight was stopped. Me and my face were delighted. I did feel badly about my partner. He limped away with me later that afternoon, and we went and got a chocolate shake. My face and his foot were not even mad at each other.

The moral of my brawling days is this: When you are fighting for your life and are taking a beating, listen to the comrade in your corner (the Holy Spirit). He will give you wisdom about how to fight. When you obey His golden words, grace comes to the where the fight rages and gives you the POWER to get back on your feet and sling the forceful hit that will turn things around.

Oh yeah! One extra thing, “Watch out for the left hook!”

We never entirely put a full stop to the unspoken conversations that habitually go on within the mind. What we mull over about the most also determines how we think, and then we act out accordingly.

If you teach your mind to think optimistic then it will do so and vice a versa.

How you deliberate about things is your mindset, and your feelings in turn affect how you can manipulate your mind. Our mindset is developed right from childhood hence our background and schooling can play a key role in this.

If you are an optimist, then persist in watering the feelings and ideas, whereas if you tend to be a pessimistic person, it’s time for you to modify your mindset.

Here are 5 ways you can use to help transform your mindset…

1: Read Inspiring Books

A person whose mind is continuously engaged in beneficial thoughts and ideas will find it difficult to even think negative. A well-chosen book always encourages a person to think positive as the conclusions always possess morals (hidden or apparent) attached.

If the book is full with helpful ideas we tend to hold a few of them in mind. A person possessing negative feelings towards success should always select a good positive and inspirational book to read.

Here is a great book to start with power of the mind

2: Use Affirmations

Affirmations are things that you say, believe and feel. Affirmations are used to overthrow bad habits, stay focused on your goals and also speed up the process of achieving your set goals. Affirmations, that are positive in every aspect, can cause massive change in your mindset consequently changing your life.

This can be used as an efficient tool to bring about feelings within you and inspire your mind.

Here are some motivational mind power videos.

3: Spend Time With Your Family And Friends

Always spend some time with your near and dear ones and moreover the people whom you look up to the most. Their expectations from you can manipulate your thoughts and thus help you to observe the world in a different light.

4: Meditate

Stress is a frequent issue in today’s world, and can in addition create blunders if you do not make attempts to eliminate it. Inferiority complexes and other psychological problems follow stress, which in the long run hamper the alleyway of positive thinking.

Meditation is a good solution for this. Meditation can be performed at any time of the day in solitude and will not only make you feel stress-free, but also help you to think positive.

5: Always Practice Your Skills

Recognize your effectiveness and skills and always try to make use of these skills. Apply your skills to increase your self-belief. This activity will not only help to sharpen your skills but will also increase your self confidence.

Anyone of these 5 can be used as a powerful tool for shifting the way you think about things and this in turn will help to adjust your mindset.

It doesn’t matter the size of it, the home organization solutions job that you will be performing, is fixable. This is not a thing that can be alleviated in one day, however. Know that home organization is a long lasting undertaking. Think tiny projects. Then get out a piece of paper and start the rules that are below.

1 – Begin With a Home Organization Goal

Come up with your home organizing goals and from there, prioritize these goals.

Write down all the areas that you need to organize then prioritize which ones are most important for you to get organized. The reason one room may be more of a priority compared to another room could be because it is a room that is most used, it is a room first observed by visitors to your residence, or it is an area that you feel would make the largest difference to your own comfort. Next to each room, write down the numbers that describes your priority.

Then, on a different piece of paper, write down your first room. Write down every one of the sections of the room that need to be organized. These sections should be small projects. For instance, good projects for the area could be: underneath the bed, on a work surface, a top drawer, and so forth. Whenever a section is completed, you will be able to cross off each of these accomplishments.

Remember, none of the goals need to be finished in a moment. Just focus on one baby step at a time. Keeping things simple is the best way to get organized.

2 – Remove the Mass of Stuff

Remove all of the stuff out of the first section on your room list.

If your first project area is the underwear drawer, then this job just needs you to take everything out of that place. Done with step two.

3 – Sort Out a Section

Categorize the stuff away from the section that that you are de-cluttering.

Make separate piles for ‘removal’, ‘belongs in a different area’, and ‘correct place’. Follow these rules:

* If something hasn’t been used by you in six months, place it in the garbage pile
* If you use the item often, you need to keep it closest to where you use it.
* If you don’t use the item frequently or just use it seasonally, then it can be transferred somewhere that is harder to get to, like on a top shelf or bottom drawer.

4 – Reduce the Amount of Items

Just for now, take away all the stuff that goes somewhere else.

If there’s stuff in the ‘trash’ pile, put it in the trash. If you have items in the ‘goes somewhere else’ pile, get it away from your section (this includes items that only need to go in a drawer below). What is left over are only the belongings that belong in the section that you are organizing.

5 – Making the Organization Solution

Set-up a solution for organizing the area that is being worked on.

The area you are working on needs to have a storage solution in place that performs for you. Get organizers that will help you stay organized. If it is a drawer, dividers with labels may be the system that works and has the longest effect. If it is a shelf, dividers and labels might work, and so on. (Note the dividers and labels theme). The goal is to make sure that you feel most at ease using the solution and that it becomes more difficult to place the articles in the wrong area.

6 – Get Things Put Back

Now you need to place the items that belong in the section that go in that spot, back into the section, using the organizer you put in place.

You can now remove this section off your list and either continue with another section or wait until the next day to do the next section……..just don’t procrastinate.

There are many people who suffer from a lack of light in their homes, even when they are relatively large and open. In fact, people with larger homes frequently have more of a problem due to having longer deeper rooms and also areas in the middle of the house that are some way from windows. People can do something about this of course by adding skylight windows, reducing furniture and even restructuring parts of the house to open them up. However, most of these methods are very costly and time consuming and there are far easier ways to brighten up your life.

Mirrors. One of the most effective and efficient ways of manipulating light is to use mirrors. This is because they are very efficient at reflecting light, hence you can see yourself very well in them. If you pick the right spots on a wall you can easily direct incoming light from a widow, out of the door and around the house. Instead think about the benefits you will get by stopping; make notes in your diary all the good aspects about what you are doing. How to overcome nervousness when you speak in public

Even if the speech you have is already prepared and you know everything about it, public speaking can be difficult. Many people are very nervous when they speak in public. Here are some tips for you to overcome your nervous feelings when you speak in front of many people.

Preparing your presentation

1. Center on yourself. Try practicing standing properly – with your feet under the hips directly. This position is the best and most stable for speaking in public. Rehearse this position with somebody or in front of your mirror.

2. Your shoulders should be relaxed. The muscles in the shoulders support directly your larynx, so it has a fast effect on your voice. Shoulders should be rolled out.

3. Warming up the voice. You should treat all your presentations as if they were performances. Prepare yourself by rehearsing. Deeply breathe into the bottom part of the lungs. You feel your rib cage is expanding slightly higher than the navel. You should thrice sigh. Sighing is your signal to the body that everything is okay and it is just perfect to relax. Then make a siren sound, starting from a high note to a lower note at the bottom part of the voice range you have. With enough practice, you will be able to find the low note connecting to the place located right above the navel. This is the natural voice pitch that you have.

Managing meeting skills

1. Directing your voice. Every time you speak, imagine that each word you say is like a beam of laser traveling from your mouth to the end person listening to you. Practice this outlook to be able to reach to many people at the same time.

2. Directing your thoughts. Pay attention to your thoughts, especially their beginnings and endings. Make your communication complete and fully rounded.

3. Diction as well as articulation. Convey clearly your message.

During questions

1. Give yourself time and space in breathing.

2. Before answering, slightly breathe out first. When you are flustered or nervous, you usually take in more additional air than you need, and you hold onto that air while you try to think. However, this is not helping you. Usually, this method causes you to panic. Remove this habit by breathing air first before you speak, allowing you to relax and thoughts to come in clearly and more logically.

The History of Biofeedback Therapy

Biofeedback therapy is becoming a strongly backed treatment for stress-related symptoms, as well as symptoms of several other disorders and diseases that are non-stress-related. This form of therapy allows a person to monitor their autonomic reactions to stress with the assistance of a therapist or analyst, who can then train the individual to utilize certain techniques to relieve those symptoms without invasive treatments, drugs, or other more detailed forms of therapy. Where was biofeedback therapy developed, and what was the inspiration behind the process?

In the 1960’s, the first studies that showed apparent success in biofeedback therapy were conducted. Prior to this time, it was believed that autonomic reactions of the body – heart rate, brain waves, some muscular reactions, etc – were uncontrollable through conscious efforts. However, in these first important studies into biofeedback therapy, it was observed that Indian yoga masters were able to take conscious control of both their nervous systems and their metabolic rates.

The studies were conducted by The Veterans Administration Hospital in Sepulveda, California, and Elmer and Alice Green, who worked at the Menninger Foundation out of Topeka, Kansas, a clinic and research facility for mental illness. Upon finding the successful ability to control typical subconscious reactions like blood pressure and temperature, implementation of various studies utilizing biofeedback therapy were put in place, and it was found that, through techniques such as gradual muscular relaxation and imagery, a person could be taught to relax any symptoms of stress that negatively affected the health of the individual.

Upon later research, it was found that other diseases and disorders had symptoms that could be remedied as well as those caused by stress. Digestive disorders, epilepsy, and diabetes are among the many diseases and dysfunctions that have benefited from the use of biofeedback therapy. The ability to “see” into oneself and target the negative responses to specific stimuli has made the noninvasive treatment a growing interest in the medical community. Anytime a symptom can be remedied without the threats of surgery or medication, it is a medical breakthrough, and biofeedback therapy, which simply utilizes electric equipment to monitor your reactions through strategically placed sensors, is certainly at the top of the breakthrough list at this time.

As the process becomes more and more successful, it will be discussed in more mainstream applications, offering patients a simple, pain-free way to learn to control the affects of anxiety and stress that cause them to age early. Now, they can look younger than their years simply by relieving the stress of everyday life.

Anger Management And Causes Of Anger

We tend to learn behaviors from those around us, and anger, like anger management, can be a learned behavior. If we have lived with people who express anger, in negative ways, we are most likely to use the same approach. The good news is that negative behaviors can be unlearned, and positive ones can be learned to replace the old, negative behaviors we have struggled with.

The key to changing old, destructive patterns of reacting to situations that make you angry, is to learn what causes, or contributes to, your feelings of anger. The following are common causes that provoke anger.

  • Frustration and stress often cause people to react with anger.
  • Being extremely tired can cause people to lose their patience, and become irritable, and that can lead to angry reactions.
  • Keeping feelings bottled up inside can cause people to explode over minor issues.
  • When people feel that they are not understood, or worse, that their feelings are being ignored, and don’t matter, it can cause an angry outburst.

Consequences of Uncontrolled Anger
Anger can actually cause, or worsen, health problems.

Anger can cause hypertension, high blood pressure, or depression. According to several double blind studies, some over a 25 year period, those high levels of hostility were directly correlated to dying not only from heart attacks and strokes, but from cancer as well. Further, anger that is kept bottled up inside, can lead to personality changes, behavior problems, and depression.

Poor anger management is a key factor in domestic violence, child abuse, relationship problems, behavior problems, workplace violence, substance abuse, school and workplace violence and delinquency, and criminal behavior.

Help For Those with Poor Anger Management Skills
Controlling the destructive aspects of anger, and reacting to it in productive, rather than destructive, ways can even be healthy. Only when your anger controls you, instead of you controlling your anger, does it lead to problems.

Anger can cause problems with your family, friends, personal relationships, and anger can effect your overall quality of life, but anger can’t be totally eliminated from anyone’s life. Things will always happen that cause you to be angry, and sometimes the anger is justified.

Frustration, pain, loss, and the unpredictable actions of others are a part of life that you can’t change, but you can control the way you let things affect you, and you can learn, through anger management techniques, to react in constructive ways, rather than the same, old destructive ways that damage your health, and your relationships with others.
