by Michael David SmithFriday night’s Strikeforce fight between Marius Zaromskis and Waachiim Spiritwolf was over as soon as it started, with Zaromskis accidentally poking Spiritwolf in the eye just six seconds into the first round, causing an injury that prevented Spiritwolf from continuing.

The fight was officially declared a no contest, but there was confusion about the proper procedures for the referee and ringside doctor to end the bout, with the announcers on Showtime saying the ref improperly gave Spiritwolf five minutes to recover.

In an interview with MMAFighting.com, Strikeforce rules director Cory Schafer said the ref actually did a textbook-perfect job of applying the rules, and he discussed some of the misconceptions that fans and members of the media have about the rules of MMA. The full interview is below.

With his nuptials on the way, Michael Bublé is preparing for married life with his fiancé, Argentinean actress Luisana Loreley Lopilato. ?I took myself to movies I didn?t want to see, I turned the heat up in my apartment to 170 degrees. So, I think it?s going to be great!? the singer joked to In Touch at the American Music Awards. Sarcasm aside, Michael, who recently announced the couple?s plan to hold a wedding in his wife-to-be?s homeland of Argentina and another in his native Vancouver, Canada, swears he?s excited to tie the knot. ?I?m really happy to be getting married. The Heat aren’t looking so hot these days. After Saturday’s loss in Dallas — which featured LeBron James and Erik Spoelstra bumping into each other, along with an extended players-only meeting afterward — Miami appears to be a very long way from its goal of a championship.

In our first edition of the podcast this season, Chris Tomasson, Tim Povtak and Sam Amick joined me to discuss the Heat’s woes, and whether or not they’ll eventually evolve into a title contender. We also look ahead at LeBron’s looming trip to Cleveland later this week and break down the improved Chicago Bulls, who have good reason to be excited about their prospects, even before Carlos Boozer makes it back into the lineup.

Our conversation can be heard in the audio clip below, or you can download it here for your future listening pleasure.

BOISE, Idaho — Three days after one of the most painful losses in the history of the Boise State program, the Broncos got another kick in the teeth when TCU announced Monday it was leaving the Mountain West Conference for the Big East starting in 2012.

While TCU’s leap to the Big East wasn’t as stunning as Boise State’s 34-31 overtime loss to Nevada, it was the final move that effectively muted Boise State’s reasons for leaving the WAC in June.

Welcome to the WAC 2.0.

With plenty to remain dour about, Boise State coach Chris Petersen refused to let the news of TCU’s departure bother him.

“I have no feeling on (TCU leaving) whatsoever, not even kind of (a feeling),” Petersen said. “The only thing I think right now is that we’re still going to be in a better league than we’re in right now, and that’s no disrespect to anybody.

“I think we took the teams that we are always fighting with and put them in a different league with some good teams over there. And I think the fans are anxious to see some new competition. … I think overall it’s still better for us. I think it will be a really good conference.”

by Michael David SmithIn the last three years, the Strikeforce middleweight title has been vacated more times than it’s been defended, and 2010 has been another long year for the promotion’s 185-pound division. Its champion, Jake Shields, whipped its big free agent acquisition, Dan Henderson — and then promptly bolted for the UFC. And then a much-discussed middleweight tournament failed to materialize.

But there’s some hope that Strikeforce will have big fights in the year ahead, even if the middleweight division fizzled in 2010. Below we look at what some of those big fights might be and where the middleweight belt is headed as we survey the state of the Strikeforce middleweight division.

DETROIT — Joe Lauzon lucked out. The release of "Call of Duty: Black Ops" came just a week before his UFC 123 bout with George Sotiropoulos, so the noted gamer could spend time on the latest video game as he tapered down workouts.

"It came last week, which was my taper week, so it didn’t interfere, but I was a little worried. If it would have been one or two weeks earlier, it would have been bad," Lauzon said.

He is ready to make the jump to the top of the UFC’s lightweight division, and Lauzon plans to use George Sotiropoulos as a springboard.

"I’m excited for it, because it means I don’t have to beat that lower level guy. I can just jump right up," Lauzon said. "Beating a guy whose 6-0, 7-0 in the UFC and close to a title shot definitely puts me close to the top."

To get that win, Lauzon is going to do what he can to make sure that Sotiropoulos has no extra advantages, including his controversial practice of wearing knee and ankle braces that cover most of his leg.

"I’ve asked the commission what my choices are.  In the past, all the commissions that I’ve dealt with have said he can wear something soft as long as the opponent agreed. People are saying I’m calling him a cheater. I’m not."

Lauzon doesn’t want to allow Sotiriopoulos even the slightest advantage, because if he loses a close decision, he doesn’t want to look back and wonder, "What if?"

"I’m leaning towards telling him no knee pad, no ankle brace. I don’t think he’s wearing him because he has bad knees and bad ankles. I think he wears them because he does a lot of high rubber guard, and it helps with the slipping. If I could take away that advantage, I will."

He was pleasantly surprised when he was offered a fight with Sotiropoulos, a fighter who is on a six-fight winning streak in the UFC.

"It’s a huge jump. I think I was building pretty good momentum, and then I lost to Sam Stout. Sam beat me fair and square. He was the better guy that night, but I think if I wouldn’t have rushed coming back from knee surgery so much, it would have been a different fight.  I think to the UFC, that fight never happened, so that’s why I’m getting such a big fight now."

As he’s done in previous fights, Lauzon designed a special shirt for his cornermen, friends and family. It takes a swipe at the Australian-born Sotiropoulos, reading, "According to Australian Game and Wildlife, 100 people are killed every year by adult Joeys. You’ve been warned."

It must have taken some intense experimentation for Redditor Harrichr to get here but it seems like a peculiarity of the German translation setup in Google Translate is allowing for playing consonants in a way that sounds like drums. Or, more specifically, a delightful way that sounds like drums.

That’s not what Rampage Jackson did on Thursday morning.

Instead, Jackson went on SportsCenter and described his fight with Lyoto Machida Saturday night at UFC 123 as one that could easily be boring.

Dan MullenThere is no other profession in America like college football coaching. None. Nowhere else can the mere mention of your name in association with a job offer lead to such rapid raises either from a new employer or your old employer. That’s because every college coaching contract is worthless. Oh, sure there may be a piddling buyout associated with the coaching contract, but in general every year brings a brand new season of perpetual coaching free agency, the annual Christmas bonus for coaches.

It’s inevitable. The only thing more ridiculous than the lack of value associated with college coaching contracts is the e-mails I always receive from fans who are quick to point out the particularly valueless “new extension” that will ensure their coach never leaves.

Until, predictably, he leaves.

I call this coaching dominoes because of the unpredictable ramifications that can ensue from one opening that seems entirely unrelated to your own school yet can end up impacting it immensely. Let’s play coaching dominoes in the SEC, for instance. Miami is a big-time job opening. Let’s say that the Hurricanes could entice Georgia‘s Mark Richt — he played quarterback four years for the Canes from 1979-1982 — to take their job, a very real possibility. Then what happens? I’ll tell you, coaching dominoes are in play.

In The Works today: when picks are illusions and Derrick Rose dismembers Tyreke Evans. But first, the peculiar position of the Orlando Magic with regard to the future.

Is Orlando Flexible or Flawed?

The Mavericks beat the Heat over the weekend; there was an element of “I told you so” to this win, as Dallas didn’t even get the chance to make a pitch to LeBron James over the summer.

As Art Garcia writes, Mark Cuban’s pitch to Maverick Carter (in hopes of making a pitch) included this now-prophetic line: “No team had ever blown up a team of all their core, then added a couple of free agents and won.” Well, at least that’s how Cuban tells it today.

Then today, the Orlando Sentinel reports that the Magic wouldn’t be averse to trading well, anyone but Dwight Howard, despite being one of the best teams in the league:

The Magic still are open to making a deal for either Carmelo Anthony or Chris Paul … Even Gilbert Arenas would be in the discussion if he wasn’t owed gadzillions. Maybe Monta Ellis.

The Magic are no fools: They want to win a title and they know they need either a big-time scorer or playmaker to get past the Celtics or Heat, and then the Lakers. They would even be willing to take a step back this season to restock if it meant they could land either Anthony or Paul.

The blockquote is long, but the gist important: Mark Cuban predicted that no team built out of free agency — a core-less entity — would never wrap its hands around that great treasure over the horizon. At the same time, somehow, the Magic are (supposedly) looking not only to add another major piece, but to part with anyone on their payroll to do so. In effect, they’re acknowledging that to make it over that hump, their core needs a serious upgrade. To such a degree that this core itself is called into question.

Davis came out throwing a lot of kicks in the early going, landing some but also throwing a couple of them too slowly and allowing Boetsch to catch them. About halfway through the first round Davis, an NCAA champion wrestler at Penn State, went for a takedown and got on top of Boetsch, completely controlling him. It was a round that very easily could have gone 10-8 for Davis.

‘Tis the season in the NBA for Blake Griffin dunks, turkey handouts — and gloomy predictions about the league’s labor negotiations.

Today at a Thanksgiving-themed charity event in New York, Billy Hunter, the executive director of the NBA players’ union, told reporters he’s “99 percent sure” the league will have a work stoppage next summer. The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement with its players expires in June, and league commissioner David Stern recently said owners are losing nearly $400 million a year, and are seeking dramatic salary and contract-length reductions in the league’s next labor deal.

The NBA has enjoyed peaceful relations with its players after a lengthy labor fight nearly canceled the 1998-99 season. In that battle, Stern and the owners were intent on reducing the power of player agents and establishing a hard cap on maximum salaries. Now, the owners are asking for more concessions from players — namely shorter guaranteed contracts and a smaller share of “basketball-related income,” or BRI.

Currently, players receive 57 percent of BRI, which includes revenue from ticket sales, national media deals, league sponsorships, and merchandise. It does not include, however, money from arena naming rights, local media deals, or 60 percent of proceeds from luxury suite and “premium” seats.

If the current playoff projections hold through the final five weeks, NFC North leader Chicago would be the conference’s second seed and NFC East leader Philadelphia would be the third seed. The Bears would have a first-round bye while the Eagles would play host to either the New York Giants or Tampa Bay. If Philadelphia prevailed in the game, we would have a rematch of yesterSunday’s 31-26 Chicago victory back at Soldier Field which concluded with some pushing, shoving and bad tempers as Bears‘ quarterback Jay Cutler tried to go into kneeldown mode after the hosts had recovered the visitors onside kick with 1:47 remaining.

“We should have just let them snap the ball and kneel it, but we were just frustrated,” said Eagles‘ defensive end Brandon Graham. “We should have won the game point blank.”

Philadelphia offensive tackle Jason Peters seconded the rookie’s sentiments.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Paul Kelly provided fireworks at UFC 123 with a TKO of T.J. O’Brien. The two made the first round a slugfest. Kelly continually moved forward and pressed the pace. Both landed punishing blows, with O’Brien favoring his knees, while Kelly landed hook after hook.

Kelly (pictured on top) came out swinging in the second round, and crumbed O’Brien with an onslaught of punches. He could not finish him off, so he stood up and invited O’Brien to do the same. O’Brien took advantage by taking Kelly down and landing right in full-mount. Kelly appeared to be in trouble until he reversed position and stretched Kelly out in a crucifix position, landing punch after punch with O’Brien helpless to block them. The fight was finally stopped at 3:16 in the second round.

Barboza whips Lullo’s legs for win

Edson Barboza (7-0) used two rounds of hard kicks to the leg of Mike Lullo (8-2) in both men’s UFC debut to get a ref stoppage at :26 of the third round.

Lullo, a wrestler, tried to counter the constant low kicks that he had no answer for by moving in for takedowns, but when he would get in, Barboza (pictured on right) was able to throw him hard to the mat. While on the mat, Lullo had his best success, scoring with punches while tying Barboza up from the bottom. But Barboza was always able to get up.

By the latter stages of the second round, Barboza’s kicks were putting Lullo down and he was struggling just to get his feet, and having trouble moving. He was just about finished at the end of the second round, and when round three opened with the same low kicks, with him going down two more times before the fight was stopped.

DETROIT — At UFC 123, Aaron Simpson will have a unique experience when facing Mark Munoz on the Spike televised undercard. The 36-year-old fighter will be coming off of a loss for the first time in his MMA career.

He was TKOed by Chris Leben at "The Ultimate Fighter" Season 11 finale in June, and Simpson was forced to take a look at the way he fights.

"I looked at fight strategies more than anything, and evaluated that fight and worked to pick up some more tools," Simpson told Cagewriter. "I hopefully have some things to surprise Munoz with. It’s good having two wrestlers with pretty big backgrounds in the sport going after it trying to beat each other up."

In addition to working with UFC standouts Ryan Bader and C.B. Dollaway at their newly opened gym, Simpson headed north to San Jose to get in work at the American Kickboxing Academy, home of UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez and welterweight contender Josh Koscheck.

"It’s nice to go out there and spar with them and see how they do things. We worked hard. Every day I was there was a good experience."

Simpson was a two-time All-American wrestler at Arizona State and coached for 10 years, first at Arizona State, then at Cal Tech. Along the way, he befriended Munoz, a national champ at Oklahoma State and then a coach at OSU and UC-Davis. Now, he has to fight his friend.

"We talked to each other and had to accept it and move forward. It’s a little bummer because there are enough guys in the weight class that you could fight, especially this early in our careers. But the fans are going to get a treat."

Since both fighters are such strong wrestlers, Simpson expects that their wrestling skills will cancel each other out and that fans will see a slugfest. He balked at the idea that a wrestling-filled fight is boring.

"You can’t just label wrestlers as anything, because there are some very exciting wrestlers out there that are fighting and knocking people out. Look at what C.B. [Dollaway] has done. Look at what Bader’s done. They’re going out there and finishing fights. Sometimes styles clash and it gets a little boring, but for the most part I think it’s a little B.S."

Mike LeachFormer Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach gave ESPN an unpleasant Thanksgiving greeting on Wednesday, filing a lawsuit in Texas district court that accuses the sports-media giant of “willful and negligent defamation” of Leach in its coverage of the events leading up to and following the coach’s firing late last year.

Leach was terminated last Dec. 30 in the wake of accusations that he mistreated injured wide receiver Adam James, the son of ESPN college football commentator Craig James. Among other allegations, Leach reportedly ordered Adam, who was recovering from a concussion, to stand alone in a dark closet on two occasions during the 2009 season. James shot video of his confinement, and the controversy came to a head when the footage was posted online.

Leach’s lawsuit also names Spaeth Communications, a Dallas public-relations firm that Craig James hired when his son’s complaints about Leach went public. The suit claims that Spaeth, which orchestrated the “Swift Boat” campaign against 2004 presidential candidate John Kerry, played a central role in leaking the video footage and accuses the firm of “creating public opinion hostile to Leach.”

In an email to FanHouse, an ESPN spokesman said the company has “not seen the lawsuit and therefore it would be inappropriate for us to comment.” Spaeth did not return calls or emails seeking comment. Rebecca Shaw, the firm’s executive vice president, told the Associated Press that Leach’s suit is “the predictable strategy of a man who is desperate to avoid accountability for his own behavior.”

Ted Liggett, Leach’s attorney, said the 49-year-old former coach simply wants to clear his name. “His reputation has taken a severe hit and been tarnished,” Liggett told the Associated Press. “On a daily basis we’re still seeing stories across the country with accounts Leach claims are counter to the truth.”

Auburn and Oregon swapped spots atop the BCS rankings released Sunday, but the most important thing for the Tigers and Ducks is to remain first or second when the final rankings are released on Dec. 5.

Auburn (12-0) had been second to Oregon (11-0) the past four weeks, but barely slipped past the Ducks as the No. 1 BCS-ranked team after the Tigers’ win at Alabama Friday. The Ducks also were impressive, defeating Arizona, but still slipped to No. 2.

The top two teams in next week’s final BCS rankings advance to the BCS title game Jan. 10 in Glendale, Ariz.

TCU (12-0) remained No. 3 but since Boise State (10-1), which was No. 4 last week, was upset at Nevada and plummeted in the latest rankings, the Horned Frogs are guaranteed their first BCS bowl berth as the highest ranked non-automatic qualifying BCS team.

LSU (10-2), ranked No. 5 last week, also lost on Friday, allowing Stanford (11-1) to climb two spots to No. 4 this week.

That is significant for the Cardinal because the top four ranked teams in next week’s final BCS rankings are guaranteed a BCS bowl berth. Since TCU, Stanford and Wisconsin, which is fifth this week, have completed their regular season schedules, it is highly unlikely Stanford would fall lower than fourth in next week’s rankings, guaranteeing the Cardinal a BCS bowl berth.
